- It’s one of two “defense unicorns” out there — SpaceX is the other.

- Anduril’s investors and founders are associated with high-profile disruptors including the aforementioned SpaceX, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META), and Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR).
But if you look for the Anduril stock symbol on WallStreetZen or your favorite brokerage account, you won’t find it — the company is still private. But that doesn’t mean you can’t gain exposure to the company.
Below, we’ll dig into how accredited investors can invest in Anduril through Hiive, and share ideas for how non-accredited investors can gain indirect exposure. Let’s go:
A Little Background on Anduril Industries
Anduril Industries is an American defense company that focuses on high-tech autonomous systems.
The company was founded in 2017 by a group led by Palmer Luckey, a U.S. entrepreneur who started building DIY virtual reality headsets in his teens and co-founded Oculus VR, which was eventually acquired by Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) for $2 billion. This earned Luckey “hall of fame” status in the world of tech and entrepreneurship … All before he was 30.
At that point, he could have taken his $2 bil and lived on a boat for the rest of his life, but he didn’t. Instead, he partnered up with a who’s who of former Oculus and Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR) execs to form Anduril Industries.
Fun fact: The company is named for Andúril, Aragorn’s sword in “The Lord of the Rings”; in the novels’ fictional language, it means “Flame of the West.”
Anduril Industries has been a busy bee of a company. Here’s a timeline explaining its trajectory:
- (Setting the stage) In 2015, the Department of Defense and Homeland Security opened offices in Silicon Valley. Roughly around the same time, Luckey met Trae Stephens, who had recently left Palantir to join another Peter Thiel project, Founders Fund. Stephens was interested in funding high-tech military applications, and Luckey seemed to have the right vision.
- By 2017, Anduril was networking with the Cali Homeland Security office to see if they could work together on border security.
- By 2019, the company was working with the U.K. Royal Navy was using Anduril’s Lattice security software as part of its modernization initiatives.
- By 2020, Anduril had expanded into Seattle and was getting multimillion dollar orders for surveillance towers. Also in 2020, The Intercept reported that CBP’s Innovation team would be using Google Cloud technology in conjunction with Aunduril tech for virtual border walls.
- By 2021, Anduril acquired Area-I, a drone company that had previously contracted for U.S. government agencies.
- By 2023, Anduril acquired rocket engine company called Adranos, enabling the company to develop motors and technology for missiles nad space launches. During the same year, it also acquired Bleu Force Technologies, an autonomous aircraft developer.
- By 2024, Anduril was contracted by the U.S. Air Force to build and test drone prototypes for the next phase of the service’s Collaborative Combat Aircraft program.
The takeaway? A ton of acquisitions. Big-name contracts. Big-name tech muscle. It’s no wonder investors are interested in Anduril stock. Now, let’s get into how to invest. *
Investing in pre-IPO securities is risky and you should be prepared to withstand a total loss of your investment.

How to Invest in Anduril: Non-Accredited Investors
If you’re not an accredited investor, you can’t buy shares of Anduril on the stock market. (Sorry.) However, there are other ways to gain exposure. Let’s look a little deeper into the company to find out how:
Does Palantir Own Anduril?
No, Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR) doesn’t own Anduril. However, it does have connections with the company. Seed funding was provided by Founders Fund — Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel is a partner in the fund. Additionally, several of Anduril’s founders are former Palantir employees. However, Anduril remains its own entity.
Who Owns Anduril?
If Anduril isn’t public, who does own it? It was founded in 2017 by Palmer Luckey and other founders including Joe Chen, Matt Grimm, and Trae Stephens. They were later joined by Brian Schimpf.
The company also boasts a number of high-profile investors, including Valor Equity Partners, Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, General Catalyst, 8VC, Lux Capital, Thrive Capital, DFJ Growth, WCM Investment Management, MVP Ventures, Lightspeed Ventures, and Thomas Tull’s buzz-worthy US Innovative Technology Fund (USIT). That’s just a few of Anduril’s many investors.
How to Invest in Anduril Stock as a Retail Investor
Considering the above, plus what the company does, let’s make a mini watchlist of stocks that might give you some exposure to the same technology and sector as Anduril*:
Palantir (NASDAQ: PLTR): If you’re less interested in defense technology and more interested in the smart, techy brains behind Anduril technology, you may be interested in Palantir. After all, some of the biggest leaders at Anduril came from PLTR, so you may be attracted to their brand of disruption.
Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT): This company offers combat and air mobility aircraft, unmanned air vehicles, and related technologies. It also has a long history; Lockheed Corporation (which merged with Martin Marietta in the 90s to form LMT) has been around since the 1920s. In looking at the stock chart, it appears that LMT has performed well over the years:
Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) manufactures unmanned autonomous aircraft systems (e.g., high-altitude long-endurance strategic ISR systems and vertical take-off and landing tactical ISR systems), and strategic long-range strike aircraft, tactical fighter and air dominance aircraft, as well as airborne battle management and command and control systems.
Raytheon (NYSE: RTX) an aerospace and defense company, provides advanced systems and services for commercial, military, and government customers worldwide.
None of these investments will run parallel to Anduril, but each offers a slice of exposure to what Anduril is about. And in the case of the latter three, they have a long history of U.S. government contracts.
Investing in pre-IPO securities is risky and you should be prepared to withstand a total loss of your investment.
