Hot or Not, Stock Market Edition: 04/15/2025

There’s always something moving in the market — in either direction. Here are some of the hottest stories we’re following right now:

  • Newmont Corporation (NYSE: NEM) has the golden touch right now; Illumina (NASDAQ: ILMN) has stellar growth prospects
  • Dick’s Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) falls on tariff fears; Texas Instruments (NASDAQ: TXN) experiences an unexpected chip setback

P.S. For more stocks making moves, check out our new Zen Ratings Upgrades & Downgrades screener.

🔥 HOT: Californian biotech company Illumina (NASDAQ: ILMN) gained 4.9% on Friday after announcing that it would report its fiscal first quarter financial results on May 8th. The company is one of the leaders in genetic research aimed at using DNA sequencing to treat cancer and infectious diseases and gets an A rating in Growth. It also gets B ratings in Value, Safety, and Financials, making it a relatively stable addition to most portfolios. Momentum hasn’t been on ILMN’s side lately, but we see its current level as an attractive entry point. We give the stock a Zen Rating of B and a buy recommendation.

🥶 NOT: Dick’s Sporting Goods (NYSE: DKS) shares fell by 2.2% on Friday as the company struggled to reassure investors who are worried about the company’s exposure tariffs. The company sources many of its products from Asian countries, making it even more sensitive to uncertainties surrounding the developing trade war. DKS is now down 19.5% YTD and has a D Growth rating. We give the stock a C Zen Rating and a Hold recommendation since it still has solid financials and could wind up fine if the current tariff turmoil subsides.

🔥 HOT: Shares of gold mining company Newmont Corporation (NYSE: NEM) gained 7.9% on Friday as investors continued to head for the relative safety associated with gold and gold-adjacent stocks. Even with the S&P 500 gaining 1.8% on Friday, investors are concerned over the possibility of increased volatility due to an increasingly unstable bond market, making gold and gold mining companies like Newmont their best bet. NEM is up 26.2% since April 7th, and our internal analysis gives it solid B ratings in Sentiment and Financials. We give NEM an overall Zen Rating of B and a buy recommendation.

🥶 NOT: Texas Instruments (NASDAQ: TXN) lost 5.8% on Friday after China announced that U.S. chipmakers that export manufacturing will be exempt from China’s retaliatory tariffs. Unfortunately, that means that companies that fabricate their chips in the U.S., like Texas Instruments, will face an 84% tariff from China. TXN has now lost 22.0% YTD and receives a C Zen Rating. The company’s Financial score is a solid B, but the uncertainty surrounding tariffs gives it a D rating in Growth and a C in Safety.
